The Sinotruk Howo truck features a reliable and efficient gear shifting system.Here’s an in-depth look at the gear shifting operations of Howo tipper trucks, ensuring smooth rides and optimal power transfer on the road.
Vehicle start: When the vehicle starts, the vehicle must be kept stationary; Starting default: the default gear is 3 gears, E mode and A mode when powering up for the first time; when starting, press and hold ‘F’ to hang 3 gears forward, and R1 to hang the reverse gear backward; Starting on the heavy-duty ramps can be done by using the crawl mode ‘C’, the default gear is 1 gear, and up to 4 gears in this mode; C mode is long pressed for 5 seconds to enter the ‘C+’ mode, which is suitable for the overloaded ramp starting mode. ‘, the default gear is 1st gear, and up to 4th gear in this mode; after long press for 5 seconds in C mode, it will enter into “C+” mode, which is suitable for overloaded ramp starting mode, at this time, the up and down arrows and the word “transmission low gear” will also flash, indicating that under this mode, the transmission is in low gear, and the gears will be in low gear. The up and down arrows and the word ‘transmission low gear’ will flash, indicating that this mode is unfavourable to the clutch friction disc and should not be used frequently; the vehicle is moving:
It is recommended to use the automatic mode under normal road conditions and load conditions; in the automatic mode, you can manually intervene by pressing ‘F’ and pushing and pulling the handle forward and backward; you can return to neutral by pressing ‘N’ while driving;
Vehicle deceleration: When decelerating, the gear will automatically decrease, and it will automatically return to neutral after 90 seconds after stopping without any operation; when the engine is turned off, it will automatically return to neutral;
Note: Manual intervention will not exit the automatic mode.
Operation Guide – Vehicle Starting:
1.The vehicle is stationary; the air pressure reaches more than 6 bar;
2.Select the starting gear: Press ‘F’ and shift forward into the forward gear (shift backward into the reverse gear).
The default starting gear when starting the vehicle for the first time is forward gear 3 and reverse gear R1 (starting from version 30 software). The driver can change the starting gear within the range of 1-8 gears
AMT vehicle starting has three different modes:
1: After shifting into the starting gear, press the accelerator normally and start at idle speed.
2: After shifting into the starting gear, press the accelerator directly to the bottom, and start while pressing the accelerator and engaging the clutch.
3: ①. In this mode, the vehicle can only run in the 1st to 4th gear range; ②. Press ‘C’ to enter creep mode and shift into 1st gear or reverse 1st gear, step on the accelerator to start, the engine will first accelerate to reach maximum torque output and then engage the clutch.③. Press and hold ‘C’ for 5 seconds to enter C+ mode. At this time, the ‘transmission low gear’ on the instrument will flash. At this time, the engine speed is about 1800 rpm when the clutch is engaged. Note: This is an abnormal starting mode. This is an abnormal starting mode. It is only used in special cases such as wheels being stuck or seriously overloaded and starting on steep slopes. This working mode affects the life of the clutch friction plate. In automatic mode, the system will automatically select the gear, and the driver can intervene at any time: press ‘F’ and push forward or pull back the handle to increase or decrease one gear each time; directly move the handle forward or backward to increase or decrease at least one gear each time. The system default operating mode is automatic mode<A>
Operation Guide – Special Notes: 1. The driver can intervene in the gear selection of AMT in automatic mode at any time; 2. Please keep the accelerator pedal in position during vehicle operation, especially during gear shifting; 3. The clutch engagement stroke and speed of AMT vehicles at the start stage are controlled by the accelerator; 4. When the vehicle is going downhill, if the accelerator is not pressed, it will not automatically shift up when the engine speed is lower than 2500 rpm. 5. The gear selection in AMT automatic mode mainly depends on the following signals: vehicle speed; vehicle load status; ground road conditions; engine torque and speed; accelerator pedal position; brake pedal status 6. If the AMT system fails, “AMT Fault” and the corresponding fault code will be displayed on the instrument; Note: If the engine stalls in the gear and the brake pressure is less than 6 bar, the emergency solution is: inflate the valve core at the rear of the clutch booster cylinder to disengage the clutch, and then start the engine. After the air pressure is fully filled, it can be put back to neutral.
Prerequisites for starting the engine of AMT vehicles: 1. Neutral; 2. Clutch is separated.
Upshift operation: When the vehicle is running in a lower gear (e.g. 6th gear), if you want to upshift to 7th gear, first raise the engine speed to a suitable range, then depress the clutch pedal, take off the gearshift handle from the current gear (6th gear) to the neutral position, and then, after releasing the clutch pedal, toggle the preselector valve from the low gear (L) position to the high gear (H) position. In the case of a transmission with synchroniser, ‘one clutch’ is used, the clutch pedal is depressed again and the gear is directly shifted into 7th gear; in the case of a transmission without synchroniser, ‘two clutches’ are required, i.e., after depressing the clutch for the first time to neutral, the clutch goes back to empty In the case of a transmission without synchroniser, it is necessary to use ‘two clutches’, i.e. after depressing the clutch to neutral for the first time, the clutch will go back to neutral and the clutch will be depressed again to shift into 7th gear.
Downshift operation: For example, to downshift from 7th gear to 6th gear, first depress the clutch pedal, take off the shift lever from 7th gear to neutral, then judge whether it is necessary to blast the throttle to increase the engine speed according to the speed of the vehicle (so that the engine speed matches with the gear to be shifted into), and after that, depress the clutch pedal again to shift into 6th gear.
1.Starting operation:
Check before starting the vehicle: Before starting the engine, make sure that the air pressure reaches the specified value (generally around 0.8MPa). Check whether the lubricating oil level of the gearbox is normal and whether the oil is clean.
Select the starting gear: According to the actual road conditions, you can choose to start in climbing gear, 1st gear or 2nd gear. Under normal circumstances, 2nd gear can be selected for starting on flat roads, and 1st gear or climbing gear can be selected for starting on slopes or heavy loads.
Shifting operation: Press the clutch pedal to the bottom and shift the starting gear.
2.Shifting operation during driving:
Shifting operation:
Normal shifting: When you need to increase a whole gear, if the switch on the handle is in the correct position (for example, pushing up is shifting and the switch is originally on top), directly press the clutch pedal and shift the shift handle into the corresponding high gear.
Special Circumstances Upshift: If you need to increase a whole gear but the switch on the handle is in the wrong position (e.g., you need to increase a gear but the switch is originally on the top), first push the switch down (this is equivalent to the operation of reducing a whole gear), then step on the clutch, and then shift the shift lever into the gear after increasing a whole gear.
Downshift operation:
Normal downshift: When you need to reduce a whole gear, if the switch on the handle is in the correct position (e.g., downshift is downshift and the switch is originally at the bottom), step on the clutch pedal and shift the shift lever into the corresponding low gear.
Special Circumstances Downshift: If you need to reduce a whole gear but the switch on the handle is in the wrong position (e.g., you need to reduce a gear but the switch is originally at the bottom), first push the switch up (this is equivalent to the operation of increasing a whole gear), then step on the clutch, and then shift the shift lever into the gear after reducing a whole gear.
High and low gear conversion operation:
During driving, if you need to switch from a low gear area to a high gear area or vice versa, first adjust the vehicle speed to the appropriate range. For example, to shift from 5th gear in the low gear range to 6th gear in the high gear range, you need to increase the vehicle speed first, and then perform the high and low gear conversion operation.
If the vehicle is equipped with a preselector valve, when the shift handle is in the neutral position, dial the preselector valve in advance to preselect high and low gears. After the preselection is completed, step on the clutch pedal and shift the shift handle to the corresponding gear.
3.Parking operation:
When the vehicle is parked, first reduce the speed, then step on the clutch pedal, and shift the shift handle to the neutral position in the low gear range.
Pull up the handbrake and make sure that the vehicle is stopped before turning off the engine.
Whether it is a manual transmission or AMT transmission, care should be taken to keep the vehicle smooth when shifting gears to avoid damage to the transmission caused by forced shifting or shifting gears at an inappropriate time. If you have any questions about the operation of the transmission of a specific model, we recommend referring to the vehicle’s user manual or contact us, and we will provide you with the most professional assistance.
