How does the Sinotruk Howo 380 Engine work?

Stroke 1: Intake (Air Only, No Fuel Yet)

Intake valve opens, exhaust valve closes.
The crankshaft pulls the piston down the cylinder, creating negative pressure.
Fresh air flows through the air filter → turbocharger → intercooler (cool compressed air to pack more oxygen) → intake manifold into the cylinder.
Turbocharger is driven by hot exhaust gas to boost air pressure, critical for heavy-load power output of the 380 engine.

Stroke 2: Compression (Heat Air for Ignition)

Both intake & exhaust valves fully sealed.
Crankshaft pushes the piston upward to compress pure air at a high compression ratio (~17:1–20:1).
Air temperature surges to 550–750°C, pressure reaches 18–22 MPa — hot enough to ignite diesel fuel instantly without spark plugs.

Stroke 3: Power / Combustion (Only Stroke That Generates Power)

Near piston top dead center (TDC), the high-pressure common rail injector sprays ultra-fine diesel mist directly into the W-shaped combustion chamber on the piston crown.
The hot compressed air instantly ignites the atomized diesel; rapid combustion creates massive high-temperature gas expansion.
Gas pressure slams the piston downward, pushing the connecting rod to rotate the crankshaft — this rotational torque is transmitted to the truck gearbox to drive wheels.
The ECU (engine control unit) precisely controls injection timing, pressure, and fuel volume based on load, speed, and altitude to balance power and fuel economy.

Stroke 4: Exhaust (Expel Waste Gas)

Exhaust valve opens, intake valve stays closed.
Piston moves upward to push burned exhaust gas out through the exhaust manifold.
Hot exhaust spins the turbocharger turbine wheel to compress intake air for the next cycle, then exhaust flows to emission aftertreatment (SCR/EGR for Euro IV/V standards) before exiting the muffler.

The 6 cylinders fire in sequence 1-5-3-6-2-4 to deliver smooth, continuous torque without power gaps.
